Among the current senior working royals, no one is stepping up quite like Prince William amid King Charles III’s treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. The Prince of Wales has been taking on more responsibilities, all while caring for his wife Kate Middleton during her surgery recovery and raising their three children. All told, King Charles has had some strong feelings about how his eldest son is handling this difficult situation, and new report sheds light on his reaction to William’s abilities thus far.
“Charles is definitely impressed by how easily William has filled his shoes,” a royal insider recently shared with OK! Magazine. While we surely buy this small update, the royal source also added that King Charles “can’t help but consider stepping down instead, for the sake of the monarchy, meaning William and Kate will be crowned king and queen much sooner than anyone expected.” We’re not completely sold on that bit of information. But the monarch does have “a serious battle ahead, and he’ll need to focus on beating this cancer,” the source said.

It’s been an overwhelming few weeks for the British royal family, following news of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis after he sought medical treatment for an enlarged prostate. The Princess of Wales has, simultaneously, been recovering from abdominal surgery, which could keep her out of the public eye through Easter. William, though, seems focused on maintaining public appearances while balancing these private matters.
Despite the pressure William is likely experiencing, he’s continued to maintain a certain steadiness needed for King Charles’ slimmed down monarchy. He and Queen Camilla have attended some events, with both offering updates on King Charles’ health. And while there is some speculation regarding whether Prince Harry will fill in on some royal duties, William seems to have as much of a handle on appearances, events, and meetings as possible.
Behind-the-scenes, King Charles has reportedly never wanted either of his sons to deal with this kind of royal pressure. But given the magnitude of this situation, it seems all the Prince of Wales can do is answer the call and step up. We’ll have to see how William continues to balance these responsibilities, both private and public, in the time ahead.
