Despite having seven children, new fatherhood is still a life-changing experience every time for Robert De Niro.

Gracing the cover of AARP The Magazine‘s February/March 2024 issue, the Killers of the Flower Moonactor opened up to the publication about becoming a dad again to now 9-month-old daughter Gia, his first child with girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

“It feels great,” said De Niro, 80, who was recently named a nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category at the upcoming Academy Awards, for his role in the Martin Scorsese Western epic.

The Hollywood legend continued of his youngest child, tearing up, “Everything that I’m consumed with or worried about just goes away when I look at her. It’s wondrous.”

“When she gets older — who knows? But that very sweet way she has of looking at you, taking you in, thinking and watching and observing … ” De Niro added, getting teary-eyed.

De Niro and Chen welcomed Gia on April 6, 2023. However, he didn’t reveal the news of his baby girl’s birth until over a month later during an interview with ET Canada.

When asked about his six children, the two-time Oscar winner corrected the interviewer and said, “Seven, actually.”

“I just had a baby,” he shared, though he didn’t provide any further details at the time about the little one.

On the red carpet at the New York City premiere of his film About My Father, De Niro spoke to Extra about welcoming another child at the age of 79.

“I’m okay with it. I’m good with it,” he said, adding that raising children “never gets easier” no matter what age you are.

De Niro has been a fixture during this year’s awards season thus far, and is nominated alongside his Killers costar Lily Gladstone at the upcoming Academy Awards. Gladstone, 37, is in the running for Best Actress, along with Annette Bening (Nyad), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Carey Mulligan (Maestro) and Emma Stone (Poor Things).

Meanwhile, De Niro is facing off against Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), Ryan Gosling (Barbie), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) for Best Supporting Actor.

Along with a Best Picture nod, Killers also nabbed Scorsese, 81, his 10th Best Director nomination. He will be competing with Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).

Asked by AARP The Magazine how he thinks he has changed and grown throughout his prolific career, De Niro said, “I’ve learned how not to worry or tax myself too much.”

“I like to just let things happen,” he added.
